How To Trim Your Sails To Grow Your Sales

It takes sailors a long time to learn how to adjust the sails for maximum boat speed. But doing so dramatically increases your chances of outwitting your competitors!

The gleaming, gigantic America’s Cup yachts circle each other in the pre-start, each trying to outwit the other.

The crew move deftly across the boat, grinding the winches, making sure that both sails are at the perfect angle to the wind (known as “trimming” the sails).

It’s all about getting the boats to go as fast as they can, and maneuvering them deftly. In the hands of these crew, these heavy boats seem to glide and soar.

But the reality is quite different

America’s Cup boats are big, heavy boats. They require a lot of strength to handle, and an extreme amount of team work.

And above all, practice, practice, practice

The same applies to your marketing.

Would you expect to jump aboard an America’s Cup yacht and expect to steer it to victory – even though you’ve never really sailed before?

No, indeed you would not!

It takes time to figure out which angle the sails should be to the wind for maximum performance. And you’d probably make a few mistakes in the process, and would learn a lesson or two from this.

Similarly, your marketing needs working at too

You’ll probably need to try different things to see what performs – and learn from the mistakes.

Now the good news is that your marketing budget will be far, far cheaper than an America’s Cup yacht. But do be prepared to do the hard yards, and to learn and learn some more.

Then you’ll be the one running rings around your competitors, and leave them behind in your wake!
